We need to prove that we are not bad youths.
These were the words of Nabua Topline Volleyball team Semesa Qereqeretabu.
They are grateful to Fiji National Sports Commission for hosting the three-day Central Community Games at Laucala in Suva.
Qereqeretabua said that kind of community engagement brought youths together.
“Nowadays, we’ve seen that of the crime level in the country, majority involved youths,” he said.
“With this kind of initiative, we’ve seen that it brings the youths together.
“It helps us forge new friendship.”
He added they had had a hard time socialising with other youths because of the stigma associated with where they came from.
“For us at Topline, we’ve been branded badly because of what had happened in our area.
“I told the youths from our barracks to show them we’re also human, we make mistakes and that we can also change.
“We come from different backgrounds, united as one and we will show them we’re still human beings.”
The tournament sees youths from the Central Division take part in three sports: netball, touch rugby and volleyball.
This tournament is a first of its kind and will be done annually.
