Fiji’s Ministry of Local Government, Housing and Community Development is focused on ensuring that every council in the country has a municipal market.

Minister Premila Kumar made this comment today during the commemoration of World Cities Day held at Albert Park in Suva.

She said World Cities Day, which was celebrated all around the world on this date, is themed ‘Better City, Better Life’.

She said each year, a different sub-theme was selected to either promote successes of urbanisation or to address specific challenges resulting from urbanisation.

“We are also increasing the number of mini-markets in suburban areas and in the regions,” Mrs Kumar said.

“We work in partnership with our donor friends, providing increased options for people to sell in our municipal markets.

“We are delivering quality market infrastructure; the provision of tents; women’s accommodation and new SME spaces.”

Mrs Kumar said the Government had contributed $2,845,000 this year to subsidise waste collection in cities and towns and in rural areas because it was essential to keep communities, open spaces, and homes clean, safe and healthy.
