High Court finds mother guilty of killing daughter

A MOTHER accused of the murder of her daughter has been found guilty and convicted of the offence by the High Court in Suva.
Rozleen Razia Khan appeared before Justice Vinsent Perera yesterday, who agreed with the unanimous guilty opinions of the three assessors and convicted Ms Khan accordingly.
Ms Khan killed her daughter by driving their car into the Rewa River resulting in her death.
The offence took place on May 6, 2018, at Kasavu, just outside Nausori.
Justice Perera said the defence did not dispute the fact that Ms Khan killed her child and the defence had based their case on manslaughter.
He said the child was tied to Ms Khan’s body around her waist during the incident.
The court heard the defence had indicated in their case that Ms Khan had suffered from mental problems over a period of years.
Justice Perera said he was not convinced that Ms Khan suffered from abnormality of mind.
State lawyer Shirley Tivao said they had filed their sentencing submissions and would not be filing any victim impact statement because of the nature of the offence.
Defence lawyer Gavin O’Driscoll sought time to file written mitigation submissions.
The case will be called again tomorrow for sentence hearing.
Ms Khan has been further remanded.
