Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA) is planning to telecast live local football matches on television.

Fiji FA chief executive officer Mohammed Yusuf said negotiations were underway with Fiji Television Ltd and Fiji Broadcasting Corporation (FBC) via the Walesi platform.

“We have not finalised anything yet,” Yusuf said.

“We are having fruitful discussions to provide up to date and extensive live football action in the country. The intention is to bring live local football matches to football fans in the country so that they can enjoy watching while at home since the policy at the moment of no spectators at any football venue apply.

“It is the next best option for spectators since the resumption of football competitions for the year will be without fans until further notice.

“Football plays an important role in society today.”

Yusuf said the sponsors were supportive of the initiative.

“We want to kick off the local premier football competition on the weekend of February 5-6 at selected venues without spectators so that we have a firm control on all the protective COVID-19 measures in place.

“Our sponsors have been receptive to the idea of planned television coverage.”
