THE main focus for the Fiji women’s basketball team before the next pool game on Friday is to recover.

Coach Laisiasa Puamau said recovery was very important.

“We are hoping to get better as each day goes by,” Puamau said.

The defending gold medal champion for the Pacific Games won their second pool match against New Caledonia 82-40 yesterday at the 2019 Pacific Games in Samoa.

According to the stats by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Fiji edged New Caledonia in their shooting percentage of 60 to New Caledonia’s 31 per cent.

Fiji led all the way in the first quarter 18-10, 38-21 in the second quarter, 60-24 in the third and finally winning 82-40.

Puamau said the competition in the women’s competition was strong and their focus right now was against Samoa.

“We have a great group of girls especially within the leadership of the team, we have senior players on the court and we are happy with today’s outcome and we’re looking forward to the game against Samoa on Friday,” Puamau said.

“We are really happy about the outcome.

“Obviously there are other tough teams in the other pool with American Samoa, Tahiti, Papua New Guinea and Guam. But then again that will be next week.”
